The Pro Guide to Traveling Light
Packing
properly is an art, especially if you are going on a long trip or multiple
destinations. You want to bring stuff you are comfortable with but you don’t
want to be lugging too much stuff wherever you go.
That
means you may have to limit yourself to a smaller, lighter bag which may seem
an impossible task. However, the following guide will help you travel light
without sacrificing a great deal.
Travel with
One Bag
To
ensure you can travel with a single piece of luggage, you need the right one! Ginormous
bags will always tempt you to fill them.
Think
of a backpack or a rucksack. While most people prefer wheeled luggage, dragging
a wheeled case can get very tiring especially on a long trip. A backpack allows
you to spread the weight across your body better and you’ll be much faster with
your luggage at your back.
Packing
Light
Pack
only what you absolutely need. This sounds obvious, but we often convince
ourselves to pack what we don’t really need at all.
Lay
everything you think you ‘need’. Take each item, and really think whether you
need it or not. Don’t pack more than 7 days’ worth of clothing. Pick versatile,
mix-and-match clothing that’s adaptable to the weather of the places you are traveling
to.
Pack multi-purpose
things that will be useful to you, every step of your journey. If you need some
special gear, check about renting it locally rather than bringing it with you.
And don’t forget that even in the world’s most remote places, you can buy
essentials such as toothpaste.
Do it in
Time
The thumb
rule of packing light is to pack while there’s enough time and not leave it for
the last minute. Packing too late will make you throw things into your bag
without space for necessities. And don’t fill your bag up to the top. Leave some
space for souvenirs!
